Heavy rains at Bonneville August 16 flooded the salt flats with two inches of rain, producing breathtaking scenery, but forcing an abrupt end to racing the following day.
According to the Web site for the Southern California Timing Association, the half-week of racing produced 22 confirmed car records and 18 confirmed motorcycle records.
Record setters above 200 mph included Chuck Billington of Tracer Racing (223.305 mph, F/FL), Ted Wenz in the So Al Special (252.623 mph, C/FMS, new 200 Club member), Neil Akkerman in the Contrivance Special (221.524 mph, E/GMR, new 200 Club member) and Lee Sicilio in The Daytona Charger (237.862 mph, A/CPRO). The fastest run of the meet went to Thomason and Tradup Racing, clocking a 296.095 mph in B/FS.
The SCTA’s website is located at www.sctabni.org. The Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s World of Speed will next tackle the salt September 14-17, then the SCTA will return to Bonneville for the World Finals October 12-15.
