Rain has again spoiled the fun at the Bonneville salt flats, forcing the Southern California Timing Association and Bonneville Nationals Inc. to cancel this year’s World Finals.
Roy Creel, chairman of BNI, made the announcement in a brief message on the SCTA’s Web site Monday evening. The World Finals had been scheduled for October 12-15.
Racers kept their fingers crossed, but had a good idea of the outcome since rain shortened the Bonneville Speedweek in August, limiting racing to half of a week. Heavy rains that week flooded the flats with two inches of water. Though the salt dried out enough to allow the Bub motorcycle speed trials in September, rains since then left water over the entire area, including the high ground staked out for the World Final races, and forced the cancellation of the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association’s World of Speed, scheduled for mid-September.
Racing will take place October 23 and November 12-13 at El Mirage in Southern California. Speedweek next year will take place August 19-25, 2006.
