Despite heavy winds that blew through El Mirage Nov. 11-12, the Southern California Timing Association managed to close out its 2006 land-speed racing season at the dry lake with 15 new records.
The two-day event gave each of the 114 cars and 38 motorcycles entered the opportunity to run twice, though it seems many didn’t, perhaps in part due to the tailwind that blew up to 28 mph and shut racing down for the day on Saturday at 2 p.m. Sunday’s racing went against a slight headwind, but continued unabated.
Mike Cook drove the Blown Away Racing B/BGS car to the fastest speed of the meet, at 252.552 mph. Don Ferguson III became the newest 200 MPH Club member when he drove the Ferguson Racing XXO/FS car to a speed of 219.644 mph, besting the previous record in that class of 210 mph.
The 2007 El Mirage racing schedule, available on the SCTA’s Web site www.scta-bni.org, includes dates on May 5-6, June 10, July 15, September 16, October 21 and November 10-11. Speedweek at Bonneville next year runs from August 11-17 and the Bonneville World Finals takes place October 3-6.
