While the salt at Bonneville gets the lion’s share of attention through the formal Save the Salt campaign, the dry lakebeds, which sit on public land, require just as much maintenance so land speed racers can continue to use the land.
Employees of the federal Bureau of Land Management and California’s Parks and Recreation department can only cover so much ground in the entire El Mirage Off-Highway vehicle Recreation Area, which comprises the dry lake bed, El Mirage basin, Shadow Mountains and Twin Hills areas.
Thus, the Friends of El Mirage will host the seventh annual El Mirage Days, to organize volunteers in work projects and to provide them a day of recreation as reward. The work projects begin the morning of Saturday, May 6, and include a barbeque lunch for volunteers. The volunteers the next day can enjoy a pancake breakfast and poker run. The Friends of El Mirage volunteer group meets the second Wednesday of every month at the El Mirage Visitor Center.
