Okay, we know about the Breedlove AMXs – in fact, we have one ready to go for a future issue of Hemmins Muscle Machines. But who knew Craig Breedlove drove a prepared Javelin with his name on the roof?

In fact, he drove three of them back to back in November 1968 as part of the Javelin Speed Spectacular Contest, in which Breedlove and Roscoe Turner from Cragar Industries chose three teams to each crew for and prepare a Javelin, equipped with the 343 and four-speed. Breedlove would then drive the three cars on the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speedweek in the Gas Production class, and declare a winner of the three teams, which would then take all three Javelins home. Poor weather delayed the actual contest to November, when Breedlove made a 161 mph one-mile pass.

Jeff Malacarne, of the St. Louis, Missouri, area, and the Concours Chairman for the American Motors Owners Association, has been elbow-deep in the restoration of the #1 car for a couple years now and recently sent me a few in-progress pics of the car.

Jeff said he plans to have it finished for the 2007 AMO Nationals in Denver, so look for it there.

And, might I say Jeff, what I wouldn’t give for a workshop the size of yours.
